Resilience is the ability of the human being to face the adversities of life, overcome them and be positively transformed by them. The research aimed to characterize the theories underlying the resilience approach. Among them the psychological theory of Grotberg (2006), Sociological theory of Vanistendael (2004), systemic family of Walsh (2005). The methodology used was documentary research (Arias, 2012) of an argumentative type since it is possible to declare the theoretical positions of resilience, and inferences around the information that become valuable inputs for the results. Among the results, resilience is presented through the factors I am, related to internal strength, I can, social and interpersonal capacities and I have, a product of relationships of trust and formal and informal support. Acceptance, forgiveness, and meaning are the foundations of resilience. Resilience is a paradigm shift where the focus is on strengths, not on deficits or problems. It is concluded that resilience implies the convergence of great attributes such as: resistance, overcoming, compassion, coping and the transforming power of the word as a means of persuasion.
